CARTA SYSTEM ADJUSTMENTS TO BEGIN JANUARY 13

In an effort to continually grow and enhance the convenience and reliability of the Lowcountry's public bus system, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will be making a handful of route and rate adjustments to existing routes and services, to go into effect beginning Sunday, January 13, 2007. Route adjustments and additions, as well as a rate increase on premium services, will allow CARTA to more effectively maximize available resources and meet route demands, to benfit the entire system.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In an effort to continually grow and enhance the convenience and reliability of the Lowcountry’s public bus system, the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) will be making a handful of route and rate adjustments to existing routes and services, to go into effect beginning Sunday, January 13, 2008.

As part of CARTA’s ongoing route analysis process, CARTA staff and the CARTA Board have closely examined ridership numbers and associated costs needed to maintain individual routes, and the minor changes and additions to the routes were the result. 

“It is CARTA’s responsibility, both the staff and the Board, to continuously reevaluate our routes and services to maximize our available resources and service,” said Chapman. “As our area changes and grows, we too must continue to evolve in order to effectively meet the demands of the Charleston area.”

The following adjustments will allow savings of nearly $93,000 in the remaining fiscal year (through October 2008) and more than $135,506 the following fiscal year. A total of more than 53 hours of service per week will be reduced systemwide. Savings will be used to support routes that are in higher demand, including CARTA Express and other fixed routes.
