MAY

Left to Right: Michael P. Melaniphy, Ray Cole, Andy Stevanus, Shannon Byrum and David Mungin (Charleston SC Team Members) Maritza Valentine, and Doran Barnes Transdev Charleston (contracted by Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority) made history at the 2015 National APTA Bus Roadeo. The team representing South Carolina, won first place in the Vapor Door competition at the APTA event in Fort Worth, Texas on May 3rd through 6th. Team members, Shannon Byrum, Andy Stevanus, and David Mungin were challenged in many different ways to determine their knowledge and ability to troubleshoot transit buses and their systems.  Through their combined effort the team used their know-how, skill and ability to bring home the win. This is the team’s first win since it started competing in 1994. This is not the only good news for Transdev Charleston, the team also placed 11th in the nation while competing against teams from much larger transit system’s like CTA—Chicago Transit Authority, DART—- Dallas Area Regional Transit, and SEPTA—Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority. The Vapor Door competition was first introduced as a scoring event in 2014 at the National APTA Bus Roadeo in Kansas City.  At that time, a company representative from Ricon, the manufacturer of Vapor Doors sighted the importance of the completion “ — we can learn from the technicians’ experience and identify potential changes in design to further enhance both the transit authorities’ and its passengers daily experience.” Bob Gallant, VP/GM Vapor, APTA 2014 Metro-Magazine. We are very proud of our team here at Transdev Charleston and are very encouraged by how well they performed. Next year is just around the corner and we are looking forward to doing well at the State level, so we can once again compete on the national stage.

That could be as simple as a smile and a wave when you board the bus and a “thank you” when you leave.  Visit www.busdriverday.org or transitdriverday.orgfor more info.
