CHARLESTON – Earlier this month Congress passed – and President Obama signed – a five-year transportation infrastructure bill, the FAST Act. The $300 billion legislation includes $61 billion for public transit. It is the first long-term surface transportation bill in ten years, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
“We at CARTA are extremely pleased that the Federal government has moved to fund public transportation for the long term,” said CARTA Board Chairman Mike Seekings. “We will certainly use every resource available to us to ensure that the Lowcountry receives an appropriate share of this funding and that residents see a tangible benefit in the form of new buses, more shelters and other improvements.”
More than 35 million Americans make public transit trips each day.
