CARTA is getting smarter about customer service. A data-driven Comprehensive Operations Analysis currently underway in conjunction with the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) has highlighted a number of opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings in operations, administration and capital expenditures.

The intent of these moves is to:

  1. Create a reliable system with consistent schedules and routing
  2. Improve efficiency and provide better travel times
  3. Design routes and connections to be more convenient

Taking these steps now will establish a platform for success from which the system can operate in the years to come.

In the short term, the changes being discussed are an important first step toward a balanced operations budget. Looking ahead, the CARTA board is committed to maintaining its current level of ridership – more than 5 million in 2014 – in a way that is economically viable and sustainable.

Public transportation has never been more important to the region. CARTA is taking tangible action to ensure fiscal responsibility while acting as a steward of taxpayer funds and providing a vital public service.

The ultimate goal is a smart, efficient and economically viable regional transportation system that will help propel the Lowcountry’s continued success. There is much work to be done in the coming months, and those details will be discussed widely in the weeks ahead.
