CARTA, RiverDogs Take Aim at Kazoo World Record

Lowcountry fans encouraged to blow out old mark.

CHARLESTON (Aug. 8, 2014) – Buzz is growing about a partnership between the Charleston Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) and the Charleston RiverDogs that could see a world record set this month in the Lowcountry.

And you could be part of it.

On Aug. 16, CARTA and the RiverDogs will attempt to break the world record for largest kazoo ensemble, which currently hums in to the tune of 5,190.

During the RiverDogs game with the Rome Braves, attendees will receive an official wristband and USA-made kazoo from Beaufort-based Kazoobie Kazoos. After the final out, a group of mystery conductors will lead the crowd in a kazoo-drenched rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

“We wanted to do something that was out-of-the-box, that put Charleston in the spotlight, and was worthy of a RiverDogs promotion,” said CARTA Marketing Director Michelle Emerson. “This kazoo promotion is no live prostate exam, but it will do.”

CARTA and the RiverDogs have partnered on a number of events in recent weeks. Several CARTA buses are sporting team-themed wraps, the authority has been awarding RiverDogs tickets as part of a weekly online trivia contest and in coming days CARTA riders may even share a ride with Charlie T. RiverDog.

The attempted record setting is part of CARTA night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. CARTA staff, as well as employees from the authority’s fleet-management partner Veolia Transportation, will be featured during the evening.

“CARTA is a great public service that is becoming even more important as the Lowcountry continues to grow,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “They’re a great partner, and we hope that we’ll be able to put Charleston in the record books.”

RiverDogs fans and CARTA are encouraged to get involved with the promotion via social media in the coming days using the hashtags #CARTAKazoo and/or #DogsKazoo.

The current kazoo ensemble record was set in 2011 at England’s Royal Albert Hall, a fact not lost on Echols.

“Kazoos are as American as baseball,” Echols said.
